Telangana State was bifurcated from the rice-dominant Andhra Pradesh in the summer of 2014 after six decades of struggle. This paper examines ways to revert to the growth of traditional, region-specific cereals for health and food security in the new state. The potential of sorghum and millet to end food insecurity and similarities among other semi-arid zones in the world are discussed. These two cereals can help to overcome malnutrition and contribute to household food security. Research and planning to improve drylands have been scant and a majority of agricultural innovations for drylands by the formal sector do not reach the farmers. Building of local capacities is critical for dietary changes. Closing the gender gaps and establishing strong linkages between cereal production and consumption will benefit the new state.</p> ER -
